Western Digital
The next big thing in data is you!

Building systems is fun. Building massively scalable systems that are used by hundreds of millions of users is even more fun. You might know Western Digital as a Fortune 150 company, or as the world’s largest maker of hard drives and memory products (we are both of those things). But, what you may not know is that within Western Digital’s Client Solutions group we design, build and ship software that reaches over 300 million customers every year! From Mobile Apps to Cloud Infrastructure to Hardware Devices our Production Systems handle enormous traffic!

The Production Systems are the responsibility of the Operations Engineering team. It is our goal to make our customers happy by providing high performance, highly available services that are always secure. As our products and services continue to grow so must our team and our thinking.

We are looking for a Security SRE within our Operations Engineering team. This is a new role within the organization which means a combination of architectural work, as well as implementation. Because it’s a new role it’s also important that anyone in this position is comfortable being the internal public face of operational security e.g. giving talks, meeting with other teams, evangelizing the values of security within our organization. Additionally, the role would help craft and implement our security posture from an operational perspective, including how we monitor, what we monitor, the tools used to ensure a secure environment, the policies that govern our production environment.

This position reports to a Senior Director of Operations Engineering inside Western Digital’s Client Solution business unit. The location is flexible. A majority of the team splits time between Milpitas, CA and Redwood City, CA. If those locations are convenient for you, great! Otherwise, we're flexible.

  • BA/BS in related field with 6+ years relevant experience.
  • Someone comfortable working with scripting languages
  • Someone with experience with common security tooling. Some examples include tools like Qualys or ThreatStack. The exact tools don’t matter but the concepts are important.
  • Someone interested in—and experience with-- intrusion detection systems, vulnerability scanners, tracking CVEs.
  • You’ve worked well with external partners and feel comfortable managing security-related vendors.
  • You understand the network stack at both the software and hardware levels.
  • You have some experience contributing to the security posture of a large system.
  • You understand what’s important to monitor (and what’s not important)
  • You can think on your feet and reason about complex topics.
  • Lastly… you enjoy working with--and helping--people!
