Our multi-tiered, distributed systems support millions of customers every month providing our customers with ever increasing ways of connecting to their WD, G-Technology, UpThere, and SanDisk products. The list continues to grow, and this means our systems and team must also grow to continue to deliver on the promise we make to our customers: Fast, secure, always available access. 
We are looking for a Security SRE within our Operations Engineering team. This role is primarily focused on maintaining a strong operational security profile across our production systems, but as part of the broader Operations team this role will also contribute to on-going system management. This position reports to a Senior Director of Operations Engineering inside Western Digital’s Client Solutions business unit. The position is based in Milpitas, CA.
The Client Solutions division of Western Digital has an extremely large consumer footprint. This is an opportunity to instrument solutions that will impact millions of people. This is a new role to the Operations Engineering group and has opportunity to help establish the security charter for the group and develop the foundation for continued team growth.
What it takes to be successful in this role
The Security SRE role is first and foremost about establishing and growing a security mindset within the operations team and larger organization. To truly be successful in this role, a candidate will need to feel comfortable communicating and working with other people through public presentations, written documents, and one-on-conversations. Clearly and effectively communicating security principles within the organization is a vital part of this role.
The Security SRE will be actively involved in helping to manage our collection and analysis of data. Monitoring and logging is critical to security operations, and it’s important to understand how to effectively implement this. This requires having hands-on experience with at least some of the various monitoring and logging tools used in the industry such as Prometheus, Catchpoint, Splunk, and SumoLogic.
An extensive history with standard security tooling is very important. This history should demonstrate the ability to choose the right tool for the job and to stay current with tools and techniques as the security environment changes. In particular, Intrusion Detection Systems, penetration testing, and threat modeling are key skills for this role. The Security SRE should be able to help choose and interface with vendors in these areas.
This is a hands-on technical role. We manage systems across public cloud infrastructure as well as on-premises infrastructure, so having solid experience using the tools that help manage these environments is important. This includes AWS environments and the orchestration tools we using to manage them, such as ECS, EKS, and Kubernetes.
A security SRE should be comfortable working with and have the ability to learn new scripting languages. The language doesn’t matter (Bash, Go, Python, Ruby, TCL, Lisp – really, it doesn’t matter) as long as it can be used to automate tasks and get the job done effectively.
Lastly, to be successful in this role a person has to enjoy working as part of a team. This role is part of a team that supports production systems, and in this team we are on-call, we write docs (runbooks), we care about each other, and we support each other. Being a good mentor and teammate is required, and this means having empathy for your immediate teammates, the broader development team, and most importantly for our users.
