Overall Job Purpose

The Senior PR Manager oversees all aspects of the organization’s public relations program across major regions, focused on contributing positively to brand reputation in line with brand and business goals; and provides regional guidance to the organization on its marketing communications activities. The role is responsible for external communications, primarily managing the relationships with press and other influential third parties; separate from, but in conjunction with advertising, marketing communications and other marketing functions. He or she drives company and product PR strategies, effectively deploying internal and external resources to position the company as a leader in its field and expand public support for the organization and its offerings.  A second aspect of the role is to guide other, non-editorial communications functions such as advertising and marketing communications on localization and regionalization initiatives and to provide HQ marketing communications team’s guidance for region-specific communications activities. The role is collaborative, working closely with marketing, sales and executive leaders.  The right professional will be creative, strategic, exercise excellent judgment and have experience in consumer and technology fields. He or she will proactively identify opportunities and create and propose solutions for issues of importance to the company’s reputation. The role has budget management responsibilities and direct local and sub-regional managers; and reports to the EMEA Communications Director.




Managing the planning, development and implementation of all PR strategies for Western Digital’s B2C and B2B brands (Western Digital, WD, WD Black, SanDisk & G-Technology)  including product launches, trade events, social media campaigns, and digital marketing programs this role is critical to the ongoing success of the organization in the EMEA region.


The role requires close cooperation with key regional stakeholders in channel, product marketing and sales, as well as managing multiple regional agencies.

Responsibilities also include providing strategic direction regarding communications programs based on analysis of measured results, as well as content development and sign off. This role requires the management of regional retained agency budgets along with regular Go To Market (GTM) campaigns that are separately funded. Frequent domestic and infrequent international travel is expected.





Job Specifics


WDC have identified a need to upscale their overall communications efforts within the higher end segments of it’s storage business – namely, Enterprise & Data Centre applications & Embedded business (automotive & the IOT)

-          This role will primarily focus on delivering PR & communications programs that drive growth within these business units

-          Typically these programs may consist of :  creating thought leadership programs, developing narratives for storage technology & vertical industry articles, case studies, developing spokespeople, coordinate senior exec speaking opportunities, initiating media briefing programs, creating podcasts, Blog content, driving News commentary / hijacks, developing profile & feature pitches, developing whitepapers, e.g. data anxiety, reviews / listicles.


-          In addition the role would manage the EMEA PR Manager for Content Solutions (our consumer tech business) and Gaming (the new WD Black portfolio of products)

-          The successful candidate will also have 3 Regional Communications Managers report directly to them.  Significant Leadership skills and experience will be essential in final criteria.



Primary Function


-          Work with regional marketing and sales leads to deliver pan-EMEA integrated communications programmes and campaigns across earned, owned and paid media (PR and Social)

-          Manage a reviews and awards programme for our consumer products across all Western Digital brands

-          Manage distribution of product and company news

-          Translate pan-EMEA copy and help to generate local content

-          Local influencer management (using agency support where appropriate)

-          Develop earned media plans to support overall marketing objectives aligned to regional business goals

-          Manage 1-2-1 relationships with key business media for our enterprise and commercial business units

-          Manage all communications around key trade events in region

-          Manage monthly reports using global reporting platform

-          Execute creative campaigns for momentum media activity outside main news cycle




Qualifications Required


-          Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or business related related field of study. Advanced degree is a plus.

-          10 years of related professional experience within a public relation, journalism, social media/digital marketing or related function.

-          5+ years experience of managing people (a team)

-          Understanding of Western Digital’s strategic and competitive position

-          Ability to gracefully handle multiple projects is a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

-          Exceptional communications, writing and presentation skills. The ability to interface with and advise senior leadership.

-          Team player with excellent listening skills and diplomacy.

-          Outstanding judgement and creative problem-solving skills.

-          Native English speaker . Other language skills an advantage

-          Metrics based approach and strong commercial acumen

-          A keen understanding of and interest in new technologies especially in the data storage sector.

-          An understanding of the IT market (Storage in particular) could be an advantage




-          Experience in creating and managing multi-channel communications campaigns for covering enterprise and consumer technologies.

-          Experience leading successful pan-regional or international programs, covering enterprise and consumer technologies.

-          Strong media relationships in key technology press in region

-          Experience working with media buying agencies or negotiating display advertising with publishers and media platforms

-          Provides regional guidance to global marketing communications teams on localization of communications and merchandising materials

-          Provides strategic input and recommendations to global marketing communications teams on global campaigns and initiatives

-          Guides local marketing teams on alignment of local communications initiatives to maintain consistency with global campaigns and programs.

-          Develops an internal and external resource strategy, including outside agencies; drives agency accountability and performance management

-          Ensures best practices are regularly analyzed, reviewed and implemented

-          Manages key relationships with the press, industry analysts and other influencers

-          Works closely with advertising and sales departments to ensure strategies are aligned with the organization’s public relations objectives

-          Directs and controls more than one functional area usually through senior level subordinate managers with employees in several locations, business units and international. Responsible for planning, budgeting, results, methods and staff. Participates in establishing organizational strategies and objectives. Makes final decisions on regional administrative or operational matters.

-          Consistently works with abstract ideas or situations across functional areas of the business. Through assessment of intangible variables, identifies and evaluates fundamental issues, providing strategy and direction for major functional areas. Requires in-depth knowledge of the functional area, business strategies, and the company’s goals

-          Excellent management and independent, strategic thinking skills with the ability to effectively direct the company's PR strategy to ensure the company's image/perception are reflected accurately and consistently to the market.  In-depth knowledge of PR principles and practices.  Excellent time management, communications, judgment, decision-making, presentation, human relations and organizational skills.
