Within Western Digital, the Client Solutions Business Unit is creating a personal cloud experience that seamlessly pulls all of your content together (pictures, music, video, documents) and makes it available on any screen, any place and any time. Our services exist across hardware products as well as pure cloud environments and creating and maintaining secure environments is a requirement for anything we do.

 

What You’ll Be Doing:

As a Product and Services Security Analyst at Western Digital, you will help define and manage the security, privacy, and incident response processes for the Client Solutions Business Unit. You will have the opportunity and the responsibility to continually improve our security, privacy, and anonymity policies and help incorporate these policies into our business and engineering processes. You will work with cross-functional teams including legal, marketing, and product support to make sure these policies are properly communicated across the organization. When security incidents occur, you will coordinate the execution of our incident response processes by ensuring that all key individuals with responsibility are identified and that status and deadlines are clearly communicated and tracked.

 

We’re looking for someone who believes that users deserve better when it comes to the security and privacy of their data. In the Client Solutions Business Unit, we also believe that the security and privacy of our products and services can be a competitive advantage. You will have the support of our leadership as you evangelize security and privacy best practices across product line management and engineering to help nurture a culture of user safety, privacy, and consent. As you work with the rest of the organization, we want you to listen to the challenges we face in product development and maintenance, and identify and make visible where business direction might have inadvertently caused misalignment with our stated principles and policies.

 

We want you to share your passion for your principles as you help to inform and educate the organization on the evolving set of threats to our customers. You will help us continually identify, evaluate, and monitor risks that could affect business activities and provide our leadership with the information they need to make critical decisions about tradeoffs and priorities. You will coordinate with other security leaders in the company as well as product managers to help improve the security and privacy position of our product lines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Improve upon, build consensus around, and execute the security, privacy, and anonymity policies and processes for the Client Solutions Business Unit.
  • Coordinate the execution of incident response processes to resolve issues when they are identified, and work to identify and communicate necessary improvements and lessons learned without assigning blame or fault.
  • Work with our business development organization to help identify and analyze potential opportunities to improve the security and privacy of our product lines…
  • Nurture and foster a culture of user safety, privacy, and consent within our product management and engineering teams.
  • Listen to the challenges of the organization in implementing our security, privacy, and anonymity policies, and identify issues before they cause conflict.
  • Demonstrate empathy for our users and help share this perspective with others in the organization so they can make fully informed decisions about tradeoffs in product development.
  • Work with product managers to coordinate security feature integration into our products and services.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 

You should have the ability and inclination to take in new information, learn new concepts, and always seek out opportunities for growth and change. If you feel that your background and experience has led you to the point where you want to take on this challenge and responsibility, and you believe you can be successful with the support and mentorship of our leadership, you should apply for this position regardless of your formal qualifications.

 
  • You will need to demonstrate both social reasoning in a business context. To support this, a bachelor’s degree with a liberal arts foundation is strongly preferred.
  • You should understand issues around user privacy, consent, and security, as well as how these affect our incredibly diverse set of users differently.
  • You do not have to be a software engineer, but you will need to understand how software development organizations work in order to help drive improvement in our processes.
  • You should be familiar with computer security and understand the social dynamics around security researchers, different classes of attackers, and different threat models our users face.
  • You will need to plan and organize multiple projects at the same time in an environment where there are often multiple and unclear priorities. You should be able to make informed choices about how to proceed and to explain those decisions to others.
  • You should be personable yet persistent in pursuing your goals, and be able to lead cross-functional project teams without formal authority.
  • You should understand that you are not working alone, and be able to reach out to others for support and guidance when you need it.
  • You will need to build relationships and partnerships both inside and outside the business, and to be able to understand others’ incentives and motivations in order to build relationships that are mutually beneficial.
  • You will need to demonstrate strong active listening skills and an ability to explain complex concepts in language that is appropriate to the target audience.
  • Finally, and most importantly, you will be spending most of your time interacting with or influencing people. You must be able to communicate your ideas in written, verbal, and visual form, build consensus in a group, achieve goals by encouraging cross-functional teams to take ownership of results, and influence diverse audiences that include engineers, product management, marketing, corporate leadership, business partners, and customers.
