ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works closely with engineering teams and in-house patent attorneys to understand company and/or third party patents and their applicability in the industry
  • Analyzes company patent portfolios and possible licensing targets to determine patent licensing opportunities, including evaluating third party products or publications to assess use of company patented technologies
  • Performs prior art searches and analysis to assess patent validity and enforceability
  • Analyzes company or third party patent portfolios to determine strength and applicability to specific technologies
  • Creates testing instructions based on applicable claim language for reverse engineering experiments to determine patent infringement
  • Creates detailed claim charts documenting patent infringement analysis or patent claim invalidity
  • Evaluates third party patents offered for sale to determine strength and industry usage
  • Analyzes and advises regarding the right to use desired technologies and appropriate freedom of action
  • Evaluates markets and products to determine industry technology usage and trends
  • Analyzes and advises on third party patents in connection with prospective litigation, due diligence, licensing/business negotiations, and/or other related business purposes
  • Communicates with patent portfolio development personnel to ensure existing portfolio prosecution supports licensing efforts
  • Maintains technical and patent practice competence through CLE and technical learning opportunities (as needed and available)
  • Some domestic travel may be required

REQUIRED:

  • Patent attorney / agent with 6+ years experience, with BS degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
  • Alternatively BS Engineering w/ 10+ years engineering  work experience, or MS Engineering w/ 7+ years engineering work experience, or PhD w/ 5+ years engineering work experience
  • Patent prosecution and patent licensing experience preferred
  • Candidates preferably have experience in the following technology areas: consumer data storage electronics/architecture, networking electronics/architecture, hard disk drives, solid-state drives, firmware/software, semiconductor design / fabrication, magnetics, and/or computer systems.
  • Knowledge of industry trends to assess commercial value of patents and inventions
  • Ability to effectively search and assess U.S. and foreign prior art references
  • Effectively present information, ideas, and perspective to peers, team members, and technical experts
  • Speak effectively one-on-one and in small group situations
  • Read, analyze, and interpret documents such as technical reports, instructions, procedures and scientific journals
  • Write technical reports/documentation, department procedures and business correspondence with good grammar, spelling, punctuation, and structure
  • Ability to write clear and concise complex technology or licensing summaries
