Western Digital’s Corporate Business Development Manager position offers a unique opportunity to participate in a wide breadth of high-value strategic projects and transactions. The Manager is expected to partner with business units and other functions throughout the organization on several areas of our strategy process, from the formulation of business strategies to the evaluation and execution of high-impact strategic initiatives, including M&A, partnerships and investments. The manager is also expected to research new ecosystems and verticals to influence and drive new areas of growth. The role is fast-paced, unstructured, and comes with senior leadership visibility, who often make meaningful strategic and investment decisions based on this team’s analysis.

  • Partner with the business and assist in the in-depth analysis and execution of various strategic opportunities, including the development of comprehensive business cases involving:
    • Market research, competitive landscape and ecosystem analyses
    • Economic analyses (project NPVs, sensitivity analyses, pro-forma scenario analyses, etc.)
    • Well-argued and structured presentations to Western Digital’s senior team, with clear recommendations and requests for approvals, as well as actionable and measurable plans
  • Work with Corporate Strategy and Development colleagues in managing and prioritizing the company’s wide-ranging portfolio of strategic opportunities, which are sourced both internally (i.e. Corp. Strategy, Advanced Technology, business units, portfolio companies) and externally (i.e. investment banks, industry partners)
  • For opportunities garnering senior management support and funding, help lead cross-functional teams aimed at achieving the strategic and financial objectives of the project specifically, but also, the overall company strategy -- projects can range from new market, partnership and ecosystem explorations to innovation and inorganic growth efforts.
  • Support transactional opportunities, which include partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, and minority investments made by our corporate venture capital arm, Western Digital Capital
  • Help drive due diligence efforts related to the above, asking appropriate questions, identifying risk areas, and suggesting mitigation strategies
  • Provide analytical support for business case analyses and transactions (i.e. valuation modeling), prepare presentations outlining the economic case and strategic rationale
  • Participate in company-wide annual strategic planning process, providing project management and other support to designated business functions, helping drive strategic thought, and uncovering attractive business opportunities
  • Research and analyze secondary market research to provide support for corporate development, strategic partnerships, ecosystem analyses and possible M&A activities
  • Develop and maintain ongoing monitoring / assessment capabilities - industry analysis, competitor analysis, strategic options, strategic capability assessments


Education, Certification, and/or Licenses and Experience: Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

  • MBA with a bachelor’s degree in business, economics, accounting, engineering, or any other technical or quantitative discipline
  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience, whether in professional services (i.e. investment banking, strategic consulting) with a reputable firm or in the high technology industry (i.e. corporate or business strategy, corporate development, engineering, operations)
  • Storage and memory industry knowledge a plus

Computer, Software, Tools, and Specific Knowledge:

  • Advanced Excel modeling skills, including the ability to create economic cases and various pro-forma scenario models that influence senior-level decisions
  • Advanced PowerPoint skills, with experience in presenting complex business and strategic opportunities to senior leadership and boards
  • Proficiency with all other MS office applications (i.e. Word, Outlook)
  • Data savviness, with the ability to drill down and identify key drivers and communicate insightful, actionable recommendations
  • Knowledge of the high technology industry (specifically storage, memory, or semiconductors) a plus

  • Comfortable openly sharing and debating ideas
  • Present professional and credible image, both internally and externally
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication
  • Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others who may have ongoing competing priorities and viewpoints, including company employees in other countries
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
  • Has self-awareness, realistically appraises own strengths and weaknesses, and focuses on self-development
  • Able to maintain effective performance and adept at multi-tasking in a business environment that is fast-paced, constantly evolving, and where situations are sometimes ambiguous
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%, typically between our Southern and Northern California campuses
