Western Digital is looking for a creative and inspiring content writer to join our Internal & Executive Communications team.  The ideal candidate will have a diverse portfolio of written material that underscores their ability to convey complicated topics and information in a simple and structured way to engage, educate and inform employees worldwide. This individual excels at working collaboratively with executives and colleagues alike and consistently delivers high-quality work even under severe time constraints.  The ideal candidate should be, at different times, a writer, script developer, project manager, critical and creative thinker, storyteller, and communication expert.

 

You must love to write and understand how to develop compelling stories from the employee perspective. You will work effectively with teammates and internal clients alike, influence at all levels, take feedback with grace and incorporate it quickly, and maintain your willingness to pitch in on projects outside of your core role in order to help advance your team’s goals.  You may also be asked to write copy for a variety of content, including emails, blogs, video scripts, presentations, abstracts, bylines and more.You’ll put your communication plans into action, crafting creative and compelling written and visual communications for a variety of audiences and channels. In addition, you’ll track the effectiveness of your plans, using what you've learned to make the communications process more efficient for future projects.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

  • Drive the internal communications story development strategy, and associated implementation, for initiatives from beginning to end.
  • Assess the needs of the project, develop and foster buy-in for the plan, implement the plan, and track effectiveness.
  • Create high quality, compelling communications, at the organizational and company-wide levels, for a variety of channels (blogs, podcasts, email, presentations, live events, videos, websites, social media, etc.).
  • Uncover opportunities with internal and partner subject matter experts to convert their knowledge / best practices into compelling stories for wider internal audiences.
  • Act as a trusted advisor and develop strong relationships with internal clients and colleagues at all levels.
  • Build consensus across cross-functional teams and influence decision making with senior-level audiences to achieve business objectives.
  • Track effectiveness of communication campaigns and manage feedback channels, using associated information to make recommendations in order to improve our strategies.
  • Interview subject matter experts, customers and others as needed to inform writing.
  • Serve as editor for copy written by other members of the internal communications team.
  • Edit and proof content for style, technical accuracy, completeness and consistency of brand message and tone across all touch points.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and issues as well as internal updates to help inform written materials.
  • Manage the content library, uploading new items and updating items as necessary to ensure continued accuracy and relevancy.

 

 REQUIRED:

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in writing, communications or a related field (e.g. in corporate, journalism, government, political, or nonprofit settings).
  • Change management communications experience (i.e. developing communications strategies and plans around changes that affect people, process and/or technology).
  • Ability to convert technical information into layman-friendly prose.
  • Experience in influencing through robust relationships, expertise and data.
  • Outstanding editorial development skills.
  • Ability to adjust tone and language based on medium, target audience and product.
  • Creative problem-solver, with the ability to think, plan, and execute on multiple projects autonomously and in an organized fashion, balancing the long-term and urgent needs of the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly and collaboratively in fast-paced and ambiguous environments, maintaining good judgment and the ability to escalate appropriately.
  • Ability to manage a complex set of stakeholders
  • Must be highly organized, flexible, deadline and detail-oriented.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter, able to produce with limited supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships both internally and externally.
