The Director of Talent Management & People Development (TMPD) Global Projects is responsible for overseeing the project teams that develop new global solutions in the areas of training, development, and talent management.  The role reports to the VP, Talent Management and People Development.


The TMPD team/function is a global Center of Expertise (COE) responsible for developing frameworks, programs, processes and tools that will be implemented across Western Digital globally.  New projects and initiatives will be based on an annual planning process, and will focus on what will provide the greatest reach, impact and business value for Western Digital.  For example, projects might include:  designing global training programs for leaders to build their leadership skills; designing a new company-wide Career Development framework; defining core suite of assessment tools; revising and improving the Performance Management and performance review process.


Since TMPD new projects and initiatives will vary year-by-year, work done by this team, and supervised by the Director will be very dynamic, and project-based.  The Director needs to have broad and deep expertise in the areas of talent management and leadership development.  In addition this role requires a strong track record of project and program management in a highly dynamic and changing environment. 

  • Oversee planning, scoping, proposing and development of global Talent Management and People Development frameworks, programs, processes and toolkits for broader rollout across the organization.
  • Provide deep subject matter expertise in the area of Talent Management and Leadership Development to help guide the teams toward high impact solutions.  This is a role for people with extensive expertise in Talent Management, Change Management, Training, Leadership Development, Succession Planning – as well project/program management.  It is not a role for expert program managers without the deep design experience.
  • Effectively scope projects, develop project plans and milestones, communication plans for successful completion of the projects.
  • Lead global, cross-functional project teams made up of HR and business team members assigned to the project.
  • Create and continuously update project and program plans to deliver high quality solutions, on time and on budget, with successful implementation.
  • Prepare and deliver solution design documents to drive alignment, buy-in and agreement of proposed programs/processes/tools.
  • Communicate (written and orally) in a highly effective way with Senior Executives – focusing on content, outcomes and value relevant to business leaders.
  • Work in very high collaboration across the TMPD team, as well as HR.
  • Work effectively in a highly changing and dynamic environment, demonstrating ability to learn and adjust quickly, and bring others along when designing or implementing new initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position requires some travel, mostly between Western Digital Northern and Southern California locations.  Occasional international travel may be required.
  • Bachelor's degree required.  Graduate degree, MS/MBA (or equivalent) in Organizational Development, Human Resources, Business Management, Psychology, or Related Field preferred.
  • 10-12 years minimum related experience with at least 5 years working in roles specific to Learning, Organizational Development and/or Talent Management. 
  • Experience working in a large-scale global, high growth, innovative, multi-cultural company, with exposure working with colleagues or employees outside the US. 
  • Experience presenting solutions and business case to Senior Executives in order to secure funding, sponsorship for projects and initiatives, and agreement on implementing specific global solutions.
  • Proven skills and track record managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong Microsoft office experience, especially the ability to create high-impact, compelling presentations geared to Senior Executives.
  • Minimum 3 years of consulting experience with a combination of change management and organizational development expertise in a large, global organization preferred.
  • Deployment of expert skills, knowledge and abilities in organization development/ effectiveness technical content domains (e.g., performance management, employee engagement, succession planning, workforce planning, business culture alignment, change management).
  • Ability to work with and influence a wide range of cross-functional work teams and leaders within a matrix organization.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large, complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership and ability to understand the strategic context, translate organizational development implications and generate a change approach, solutions that drives the desired results.
  • Demonstrated success working with and managing cross-functional teams, committees, councils in identifying talent management and people development gaps, defining solutions, and managing the implementation with tangible results.
