The Director of Strategic Sourcing for Custom Silicon is a dynamic and results-driven leader who will direct, develop and implement the necessary functional and process competencies to plan, source, and purchase and deliver world-class product. In this role this person will manage the storage controllers commodity sourcing function which includes managing a team of Global Commodity Manager’s responsible for suppliers that provide custom silicon components (ASICs) for data storage applications. We are looking for a passionate, driven, visionary leader with a track-record of performance.


The Director of Strategic Sourcing for Custom Silicon will work with multiple component and product engineering teams to develop and execute sourcing strategies. The custom silicon sourcing organization is responsible for assessing, sourcing, and managing custom silicon (ASICs) suppliers, supporting WD’s technology development requirements and global supply chain operations.          


  • Develop & implement sourcing strategies based on market dynamics.
  • Understanding of should cost methodology and how to do clean sheet.
  • Responsible for conducting spend analysis, analyzing supply markets, identifying sourcing value levers, executing competitive RFIs/RFPs and leading supplier negotiations.
  • Builds strong relationships with executive team and key stakeholders across the business to agree on business goals and key requirements and remove obstacles for sourcing teams.
  • Manages complex sourcing initiatives, leads large cross-functional teams and ensures teams understand supply market dynamics and develop innovative supply solutions.
  • Ensures integrity of savings tracking and reporting efforts and works with Finance team to ensure negotiated savings are realized.
  • Establishes leading supplier management practices, building policies and procedures for reviewing supplier performance and ensuring new value is created year over year.
  • Builds and develops strategic sourcing talent. Hires, develops and coaches the strategic sourcing team. Manages retention, compensation, performance management, resource scheduling and planning, capability and skill development, career development etc.
  • 15+ years of successful strategic sourcing expertise including managing direct reports.
  • Strategic sourcing experience must include global agreements for custom silicon (ASIC) components.
  • Candidate must have an understanding of ASIC development processes, wafer manufacturing and chip packaging and test (gained either through engineering degree or extensive experience sourcing in those areas).
  • The candidate needs to promote & encourage employee engagement and talent development.
  • Proven ability to develop and lead complex strategic sourcing strategies and initiatives to deliver significant business impact.
  • Proven ability working with business leaders, stakeholders and internal operations teams’ ability to lead high-performance teams and build strong and lasting partnerships.
  • Experience with strategic sourcing of custom silicon (ASIC) components from major suppliers including RFI/RFP, Product SOW Agreements, Long Term Supply and Pricing Agreements, Master Supply Agreements, Ongoing Supplier Performance Reviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a highly matrixed environment
  • Ability to successfully interact and positively influence at all levels within organizations, included       executive levels
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Fluent in English.
  • Ability to assess the financial condition and operational capability of suppliers
  • Strong business acumen
  • Extensive contract negotiation experience
  • Strong analytical skills (i.e. cost modeling, quotation analysis, supplier selection)
Education Requirements:
  • B.S./B.A. degree required (in relevant area such as Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or similar discipline)
  • MBA and other relevant degree /certification (e.g., CPM, CPSM) highly desirable
