About our team:  Western Digital’s Corporate Strategy and Development team (CS&D) is a relatively small but high-impact team within the corporation. Though our projects are staffed cross-functionally (by design), we essentially provide four main practice areas:

  • Corporate Development*: Enables strategy-driven, inorganic growth opportunities, including partnerships, JVs, divestitures, mergers and acquisitions, and minority investments in start-up companies by Western Digital Capital, the corporation’s venture investment arm.
  • Strategic Financial Analysis*: Creates and builds models offering in-depth analysis and insight on investment, M&A, and operational strategies. In addition, helps identify new, scalable business opportunities by finding unique insights on new markets, competitors, and business trends.
  • Corporate Strategy: Leads the formal corporation-wide effort of strategic planning from market sizing / intelligence to segment strategy establishment and strategy execution. In addition, the team works on strategic and transformation initiatives throughout the company, including post-M&A integration activities and government relations.
  • Corporate Venture Capital: The Western Digital Capital group manages a portfolio of investments in start-up companies and third-party managed funds that enhance the data storage ecosystem.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with the business and assist in the in-depth analysis and execution of various strategic opportunities, including the development of comprehensive business cases involving:
    • Strategic financial analysis (project NPVs, sensitivity analysis, pro-forma scenario analysis, etc.)
    • Market research and competitive landscape analysis
    • Well-argued presentations to Western Digital’s senior team, with clear recommendations and requests for investment approvals, as well as actionable and measurable plans
  • Work with Corporate Development colleagues in managing and prioritizing the company’s wide-ranging portfolio of strategic opportunities, which are sourced both internally (i.e. Corp. Strategy, business units, portfolio companies) and externally (i.e. investment banks, industry partners)
  • Lead all aspects of the deal process, including sourcing, qualification, initial rationale/pitch, financial modeling, due diligence and closing & integration activities
  • Lead and coordinate a cross-functional deal team within WDC as well as serve as a point of contact to other parties
  • Help lead all aspects of live transaction processes, which include mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and minority investments made by our corporate venture capital arm, Western Digital Capital
  • Provide analytical support for transactions (i.e. valuation modeling), prepare presentations highlighting the economic case and strategic rationale for transactions
  • Actively participate in due diligence efforts, asking appropriate questions, identifying risk areas, suggesting mitigation strategies, and managing internal processes and teams.

Qualifications:

Education, Certification, and/or Licenses and Experience: Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, accounting, engineering, or any other technical or quantitative discipline; MBA is strongly preferred
  • 4-6 years of relevant work experience, whether investment banking with a reputable firm or corporate development within the high technology industry
  • Prior semiconductor industry experience a plus, but not required

Computer, Software, Tools, and Specific Knowledge:

  • Advanced Excel modeling skills, including the ability to create economic cases and various pro-forma scenario models that influence senior-level decisions
  • Advanced PowerPoint skills, with experience in presenting complex subject matter, whether strategic or financial, to senior leadership and boards
  • Proficiency with all other MS office applications (i.e. Word, Outlook)
  • Data savviness, with the ability to drill down and identify key drivers and communicate insightful, actionable recommendations
  • Knowledge of the high technology industry (specifically storage, memory, or semiconductors) a plus

Interpersonal and Other:

  • Present professional and credible image, both internally and externally
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication
  • Comfortable openly sharing and debating ideas
  • Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others who may have ongoing competing priorities and viewpoints, including company employees in other functions and/or geographies
  • Has self-awareness, realistically appraises own strengths and weaknesses, and focuses on self-development
  • Driven, self-starter with ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Able to maintain effective performance and adept at multi-tasking in a business environment that is fast-paced, constantly evolving, and where situations are sometimes ambiguous
